Longtime Reds executive Chief Bender dies (AP)
Former Cincinnati Reds scout and farm director Sheldon “Chief” Bender, who spent 64 years in professional baseball, died Wednesday. He was 88. Bender died in Hamilton, Ohio, from complications of a recent fall at his home. The Reds’ minor league player of the year award is named for Bender. He retired in 2005.

Jamie Moyer has been topping younger pitchers for years. Jeremy Affeldt became the latest one. Hamilton’s 2-run double leads Rangers to 6-1 win over Royals (AP)
Josh Hamilton hit a two-run double in the fifth inning Wednesday and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 in their spring training opener. Hamilton was the first player chosen in the 1999 draft, but played only 15 professional games from 2003-06 after being suspended for violating baseball’s drug policy.
