    Diamondbacks 11, Phillies 5 (AP)

Once Ryan Howard grabbed his leg and came up limping after diving for a grounder, it hardly mattered the Philadelphia Phillies were on their way to a loss. Exhale Phillies fans: It’s only a cramp. Orlando Hudson drove in four runs on four hits, Micah Owings pitched five effective innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat [...]

    Orioles 6, Royals 2 (AP)

Jeremy Guthrie wasn’t trying to insult the hapless Kansas City Royals. He was only being honest. “I was missing up, I was throwing breaking balls down. I was up and down and all over the place except where I needed to be,” the Baltimore starter said. “Today was a tough day.” But fortunately for him, [...]

    Marlins 9, Cubs 4 (AP)

Lou Piniella didn’t need too many words to sum up what he saw Tuesday night. Jeremy Hermida hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning and Josh Willingham added a three-run double in the eighth to lead the Florida Marlins to a 9-4 victory over the slumping Chicago Cubs. Derrek Lee hit a solo [...]

    Pirates 4, Padres 1 (AP)

Tom Gorzelanny overcame a shaky start and kept himself among the National League’s ERA leaders. Gorzelanny, who entered the game third in the NL with a 2.51 ERA, lowered that number to 2.39 after overcoming a shaky first inning to work seven solid innings in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres [...]

Twins 9, White Sox 2 (AP)

The Minnesota Twins appear to be regaining the form that carried them to the AL Central title last season. And they’re doing it against one of their biggest rivals. Justin Morneau homered and drove in four runs and the Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 9-2 Tuesday night for their third straight win. Morneau went [...]

    Dodgers 10, Nationals 0 (AP)

Brad Penny shrugged off a dominating effort as if it were nothing special, while Juan Pierre relished his breakout power night. Penny scattered four singles over 6 1-3 innings, Pierre had a career-high four extra-base hits and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals 10-0 on Tuesday night.

Tigers 14, Devil Rays 2 (AP)

Gary Sheffield put on a power display for the hometown fans. Sheffield homered twice and drove in five runs, and Jeremy Bonderman won his fourth straight start as the Detroit Tigers cruised past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 14-2 on Tuesday night. “When you go 0-for-4 and the game’s over, you lost and you go [...]

Reds call up Wise to replace injured Freel (AP)

Reds outfielder Ryan Freel was released from the hospital Tuesday and placed on the 15-day disabled list a day after he was hurt in a frightening outfield collision. Freel suffered contusions to his head and neck when he ran into right fielder Norris Hopper in the third inning of Monday’s 4-0 win over Pittsburgh.

Rose investigator: Selig should suspend players who don’t cooperate (AP)

The lawyer who headed baseball’s investigation of Pete Rose wants commissioner Bud Selig to suspend players who don’t cooperate with the steroids probe spearheaded by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell. John Dowd said Selig should try to overturn the 1980 arbitration decision in a case involving Ferguson Jenkins.

Johnson not sure when he’ll be back (AP)

Nick Johnson’s comeback is going to take a little longer than he expected in spring training. The Washington first baseman said in the spring that he would complete his rehabilitation from a broken right leg and rejoin the Nationals by June 1. With that self-imposed deadline looming later this week, Johnson backed off before Tuesday’s [...]
