Astros (ss) 6, Express 4 (AP)

Jason Jennings settled down and finished with a flourish in his final spring training tuneup. Houston’s No. 2 starter gave up two runs — one earned — in the first inning before finding a groove Thursday night and pitching an Astros split squad to a 6-4 victory over the Round Rock Express, their Triple-A affiliate.

Arizona options Enrique Gonzalez and Dana Eveland to minors (AP)

The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned right-hander Enrique Gonzalez and lefty Dana Eveland to their minor league camp on Thursday. Gonzalez and Eveland had been competing to be the Diamondbacks’ fifth starter, but each was roughed up in his last spring training outing. Gonzalez had a 6.52 ERA in five games, and Eveland had an 8.25 ERA […]

Female ump flawless in big league exhibition game (AP)

Kenny Rogers and Eric Gagne will start the season on the disabled list, while Freddy Sanchez and Jim Edmonds might be ready soon. But the most intriguing person on the field at spring training Thursday has no shot at being in the big leagues next week — she’ll be making close calls in the […]

    Twins 10, Reds 2 (AP)

Carlos Silva followed his worst performance of spring training with his best, pitching five shutout innings Thursday night during the Minnesota Twins’ 10-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Silva is in line to be the Twins’ fifth starter despite his poor spring training. He gave up nine runs in only 3 1-3 innings against Pittsburgh […]

Mets 13, Dodgers (ss) 2 (AP)

Lastings Milledge is fighting for one of the final spots on the New York Mets’ roster, so he realizes he has to block out some pain. Milledge returned to action Thursday after missing three games because of a bruised right hand and went 1-for-2 with an RBI while playing the last four innings of New […]

White Sox 5, Barons 4 (AP)

Adam Russell already had made a strong impression on the Chicago White Sox. He was hoping to make another one on his soon-to-be minor league teammates. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound right-hander gave up two runs in three innings Thursday night and the White Sox rallied for a 5-4 exhibition win over the Birmingham Barons, their Double-A […]

Arizona designates Krynzel for assignment (AP)

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated outfielder Dave Krynzel for assignment on Thursday. The 25-year-old Krynzel batted .333 with a home run and eight RBIs in 21 spring training games. Krynzel spent last season with Milwaukee’s Triple-A Nashville affiliate.

Brewers 4, Angels (ss) 2 (AP)

Geoff Jenkins doubled in the first and sixth innings to drive in three runs as the Milwaukee Brewers ended their home exhibition schedule Thursday with a 4-2 victory over a Los Angeles Angels squad of mostly minor leaguers. Most of the Angels’ major leaguers, and manager Mike Scioscia and his coaching staff were in Los […]

Padres (ss) 6, Mariners (ss) 1 (AP)

Jake Peavy needed only 44 pitches to get through his final tuneup of the spring. The Padres’ opening day starter looked sharp as he threw three shutout innings in a 6-1 win Thursday against a Mariners split squad of mostly minor leaguers. Peavy (2-1) allowed two hits and struck out three and said he’s ready […]

    Indians 8, Braves 2 (AP)

Fausto Carmona pitched six hitless innings and the Cleveland Indians touched up Tim Hudson in an 8-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Carmona walked three and struck out five. Hudson pitched three scoreless innings during his final outing of spring training before running into trouble in the fourth, when he gave up three […]
