Sox need bullpen help, but won’t land Lidge

With two weeks left before the regular season, late-inning relief remains a glaring hole in Boston. But Ken Rosenthal says in his latest notes that the Astros aren’t about to deal Brad Lidge, leaving the Red Sox with limited options.

Santana finds changeup, lowers ERA to 0.64 (AP)

Regular season, spring training — doesn’t matter. Johan Santana is almost unhittable. The two-time Cy Young Award winner pitched five shutout innings Sunday, allowing one hit and leading the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 victory over a Philadelphia Phillies split squad in Fort Myers, Fla. Santana walked three and struck out two, lowering his […]

Athletics (ss) 7, Diamondbacks 5 (AP)

Livan Hernandez was ineffective again, and Nick Swisher hit a three-run homer to help an Oakland Athletics split squad beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 on Sunday. Oakland tagged Hernandez for seven runs and 11 hits in four innings, his second consecutive poor outing. “I got beat and gave up seven runs,” Hernandez said.

    Rangers 12, Rockies 8 (AP)

Bruce Chen kept the competition tight for the No. 5 spot in Texas’ rotation on the same day two other candidates were taken out of the mix. Chen pitched three scoreless innings Sunday in the Rangers’ 12-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The left-hander gave up five hits, picked off two runners and lowered his […]

    Cardinals 5, Mets 4 (AP)

The closer the Cardinals get to opening day, the more it appears Jason Isringhausen will be ready to start the season. Isringhausen started and faced three batters Sunday in St. Louis’ 5-4 victory over the New York Mets. The closer threw 15 pitches, nine for strikes, and struck out Carlos Beltran looking on a cutter.

White Sox 14, Padres 7 (AP)

Padres manager Bud Black called it “arena baseball.” The Chicago White Sox roughed up David Wells in his third start of spring training and beat San Diego 14-7 on Sunday in a game that featured 34 hits. The 43-year-old Wells gave up seven runs and 10 hits in three innings, but said he wasn’t concerned.

Twins 4, Phillies (ss) 3 (AP)

Johan Santana has found his baffling changeup. Santana allowed just one hit in five shutout innings and the Minnesota Twins beat a Philadelphia Phillies split squad 4-3 Sunday. The AL Cy Young Award winner walked three and struck out two, lowering his spring ERA to 0.64. “All of my pitches are there,” Santana said.
