Lee, Morneau, Piazza hit first spring homers (AP)

Justin Morneau, Carlos Lee and Mike Piazza all were off to fast starts this spring; they just didn’t have any home runs to show for it. That changed Saturday. Morneau went 3-for-3 with his first homer of the spring in Minnesota’s 7-3 victory over Pittsburgh. The AL MVP is hitting .312 (10-for-32) after batting […]

    Diamondbacks 6, Royals 3 (AP)

The fourth inning wasn’t pretty for the Royals’ big-money pitcher on Saturday. Gil Meche, who signed a five-year, $55 million contract with Kansas City in December, pitched three strong innings before all six Arizona batters he faced in the fourth inning reached base. The Diamondbacks went on to win 6-3 on Saturday.

At 44, Moyer still has a few wins left (AP)

No matter the audience, Jamie Moyer commands attention. Reporters regularly congregate around Moyer’s locker and fellow pitchers often chat him up. Coaches sometimes seek his advice and just about anyone with a question about pitching turns to Moyer. The 44-year-old left-hander entering his first full season with the Philadelphia Phillies epitomizes the term “crafty veteran.” […]

    Rockies 12, Giants 2 (AP)

Aaron Cook looked like the Rockies’ ace with 5 1-3 shutout innings Saturday in Colorado’s 12-2 win over San Francisco. And he won the job. Colorado manager Clint Hurdle announced after the game that Cook would start on opening day against Arizona on April 2. “We have been tilted that way since early on.

    Padres 7, Cubs 3 (AP)

Kevin Kouzmanoff looks like he’s ready to put together a fast start when the regular season begins next month. Kouzmanoff hit a tiebreaking RBI single and a two-run homer to help the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 Saturday. Kouzmanoff’s sixth-inning single put San Diego ahead 4-3. He homered in the eighth.

Nationals 13, Mets (ss) 1 (AP)

Mets right-hander Chan Ho Park got off to a wild start Saturday, and never settled down completely. Park walked the first two batters of the game and allowed seven runs in three innings as a New York split squad lost 13-1 to the Washington Nationals. “Today Park had trouble locating, was all over the place,” […]

Dodgers owner says 2009 spring move to Arizona on schedule (AP)

Owner Frank McCourt says everything is on track for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ move in 2009 from their longtime Florida home to a new spring training facility in Glendale, Ariz., they will share with the Chicago White Sox. “These things are never done till they are done, but there’s nothing I see on the horizon […]

    Brewers 11, Athletics 4 (AP)

Manager Bob Geren remains confident in Joe Kennedy even after his latest rough spring training outing. Kennedy, the favorite for Oakland’s fifth starter’s spot, was shelled for nine runs in 2 1-3 innings Saturday in the Athletics’ 11-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. “He’s had a track record of success before,” Geren said.
