    Sosa hits second homer (AP)

Sammy Sosa is finding a groove in his comeback with the Texas Rangers. Sosa homered for the second time in spring training, going 2-for-3 Wednesday in the Rangers’ 9-8 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Surprise, Ariz. The 38-year-old Sosa, who didn’t play in the major leagues last season, hit a three-run homer that […]

Former Phillies coach, manager Vukovick in grave condition (AP)

Longtime Philadelphia Phillies coach John Vukovich is in grave condition in a Philadelphia-area hospital due to complications caused by an inoperable brain tumor, the team said Wednesday. The 59-year-old Vukovich, who was also a former manager with Philadelphia and the Chicago Cubs, spent the last 19 years with the Phillies.

    Reds 1, Yankees 1, 10 innings (AP)

Andy Pettitte had a well-known friend watch his second spring training start. And they both got a scare three pitches into the game. With former Houston and Yankees’ teammate Roger Clemens in attendance, Pettitte allowed three hits over three scoreless innings in New York’s 1-1, 10-inning tie with the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night.

    Angels 6, Padres 4 (AP)

Angels manager Mike Scioscia took a playful shot at new San Diego Padres manager Bud Black after Los Angeles’ 6-4 victory Wednesday. Black was Scioscia’s pitching coach with the Angels the previous seven seasons. “Buddy’s a different kind of manager,” Scioscia said. “Look at him. He’s got that (lineup card) sticking out of his pocket […]

    Ilitch sees investment paying off

After 13 unsuccessful seasons as the Detroit Tigers owner, Mike Ilitch finally reached the World Series last year. Even the five-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals didn’t diminish the experience and the love he’s received from all over Michigan ever since.
“The last few months, it has been steady,” Ilitch said during a rare visit […]

Brewers (ss) 8, Rockies 2 (AP)

Byung-Hung Kim didn’t last his scheduled three innings of relief in the Colorado Rockies’ 8-2 loss to a Milwaukee Brewers’ split squad on Wednesday. “I was tired. I’ve been working out very hard,” Kim said. “I think it’s just early in spring training.” Kim gave up four runs, four hits and four walks in 2 […]

    Myers struggles, but Phils win

The Philadelphia Phillies used the long ball and solid relief to overcome a short outing Brett Myers.
Myers struggled with his control from the outset and lasted only 2 2-3 innings Wednesday, but homers by Brennan King, Pat Burrell and Wes Helms carried the Phillies to a 10-inning, 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on […]

    Meche stays low-key (AP)

Gil Meche’s days as an obscure starter are over. What hasn’t changed is his low-key outlook. “High profile or not, I’m going to be the same guy when I’m on the mound, the same guy in the clubhouse,” Meche said Wednesday after allowing one run on four hits for the Kansas City Royals in a […]
