Greg Maddux was missing his pinpoint control during his San Diego debut. He was still pretty effective, though. Maddux allowed two walks and four baserunners in two scoreless innings, but the Oakland Athletics beat the Padres 4-3 Sunday. From Marines in Iraq to Padres in spring training, minus a finger (AP)
One by one, more than 80 players seated on a back field of the Padres’ spring training complex stood and gave their names and where they were last season. “Jesus Lopez. Fort Wayne. Eugene.” Class-A teammates laughed and teased. “Michael Johnson. Pittsburgh Pirates. Indianapolis.” The group welcomed Johnson into the organization.

Cardinals 12, Marlins 3 (AP)
The St. Louis Cardinals are counting on more from Anthony Reyes this season, and his spring training debut was a good start.
