Spring Report: Halladay to Use Cutter Less

Right-hander Roy Halladay couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. Reports a few weeks back had him suffering some sort of injury to his right forearm, a problem that surfaced on two occasions in 2006.

Fit Bonds says he’s unconcerned by off-field issues (AP)

Barry Bonds insisted he’s unfazed by all his off-the-field issues and is ready to resume his pursuit of the home run record. “Let them investigate. Let them, they’ve been doing it this long,” Bonds said Tuesday after his first spring training workout with the San Francisco Giants. “It doesn’t weigh on me at all [...]

    Delgado arrives at camp (AP)

Carlos Delgado arrived in Mets camp Tuesday declaring himself ready for opening day, whether it’s in St. Louis or with his wife Betzaida Garcia, for the birth of their first child. Delgado says he’s “pretty close” to 100 percent after off-season surgeries on his right wrist and left elbow. He spent his first day in [...]

Suzuki intrigued by free agency, waits for Mariners’ offer (AP)

Ichiro Suzuki didn’t look particularly imposing. He never does. Not with his lithe body in prime condition, as usual. And certainly not with a pink T-shirt, black long sleeves, blue jeans with camouflage patches, shiny silver sneakers and black-and-white knit cap all clinging to him like a skateboarding teenager wearing his little brother’s clothes.

Johnson seeing straight again after vision problem in ‘06 (AP)

Dan Johnson wants to win back a starting job with the Oakland Athletics, and he has one significant thing working for him: He can see again. Johnson spent the second half of last season at Triple-A Sacramento after beginning the year as Oakland’s starting first baseman. While he offers no excuses for why he struggled [...]

Edmonds to go easy first few weeks of spring training (AP)

Jim Edmonds will be taking it easy at the start of spring training following a winter that included shoulder and toe surgery and a continued recovery from post-concussion syndrome. The St. Louis Cardinals’ center fielder won’t hit or run during the first couple of weeks of workouts, and will only throw lightly.

Reds’ Dunn trying to forget late-season fade (AP)

Adam Dunn is still trying to forget about his late-season fade. In the last two months of the season, the burly Cincinnati Reds outfielder hit .174. He didn’t homer in his last 21 games, and drove in only five runs in the final 36 games — and the Reds dropped out of playoff contention. “I’m [...]

Leyland fired up about second year with Tigers (AP)

Jim Leyland calmly talked about baseball while sprinkling in some jokes and anecdotes during morning and afternoon chats over four days. Then on Tuesday morning, the Detroit Tigers’ manager got angry in front of reporters for the first time at spring training. Leyland lashed out at ex-Tiger Dmitri Young, who said the team cut him [...]

Castillo shows renewed promise at spring training workout (AP)

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Jose Castillo brushed off the criticism leveled at him by shortstop Jack Wilson, saying he’s focused on regaining his starting job. The two met Tuesday morning to talk about Wilson’s public lashing of Castillo last month. Neither discussed the meeting afterward, but Wilson said beforehand, “I’m sure everything’s going to be [...]
