D-Rays have what other teams want

The Devil Rays have a number of every-day players that other teams would like to snatch away. But what would it take acquire the likes of outfielders Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli? Ken Rosenthal looks at this and much more in his latest notes from around the league.

Padres add Meacham, Colbert to coaching staff (AP)

New Padres manager Bud Black hired former college teammate Bobby Meacham as his first base coach and Craig Colbert as his bench coach on Tuesday. They replace Tye Waller and Tony Muser, whose contracts expired Oct. 31. The Padres also gave pitching coach Darren Balsley a two-year extension. Meacham, who has more than 26 seasons […]

    Negotiations underway with Matsuzaka

Daisuke Matsuzaka dined with his would-be Boston bosses and took in a Los Angeles Lakers game during a trip to the United States, then headed back to Japan and left his agent to work out a deal with the Red Sox.
“We had some initial discussions yesterday,” agent Scott Boras said Tuesday in a telephone interview […]

Rockies, Francis finalizing four-year contract (AP)

Pitcher Jeff Francis and the Colorado Rockies are nearing completion on a four-year contract worth about $13 million, a deal that would include a team option for 2011. Jeff Bridich, the team’s director of baseball operations, confirmed the talks but said negotiations are still under way. The amount of the deal was disclosed by a […]

Speier gets `dream job’ with Angels (AP)

Justin Speier thinks general managers around the majors realize more than ever the importance of a strong bullpen. That concept landed the 33-year-old right-hander a four-year, $18 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. “This is a dream job with a team that’s going places, a team that’s definitely in championship contention,” Speier said Tuesday […]

Ramirez sees reason to celebrate (AP)

When Aramis Ramirez heard the Chicago Cubs had reached an agreement with Alfonso Soriano, he jumped for joy. He envisions more celebrations. After keeping Ramirez for $75 million over five years and adding Soriano, the Cubs are far more optimistic than they were last month, when they finished the season with the National League’s worst […]

Morneau’s fine, but feel free to argue

I am fine with the choice of Twins first baseman Justin Morneau as American League MVP. I also would have been fine with the selection of Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter or Twins catcher Joe Mauer. The whole thing is completely subjective and debatable, which drives statistical analysts crazy, but makes baseball fun.

    Catalanotto returns to Texas (AP)

Needing a utility player and likely a leadoff hitter, the Texas Rangers turned to an old friend. Free agent outfielder Frank Catalanotto finalized a $13 million, three-year contract Tuesday to return to Texas, where in 2001 he started at five positions and finished fifth in the AL batting race with a career-best .330 average.

Corrales hired as Nationals’ bench coach (AP)

Former major league manager Pat Corrales was hired Tuesday by the Washington Nationals as their bench coach, the position he held with Atlanta the past eight seasons. New Nationals manager Manny Acta completed his staff by also adding former Montreal Expos first-base coach Jerry Morales, third-base coach Tim Tolman and bullpen coach Rick Aponte.
