    Phillies 3, Marlins 2 (AP)

The Florida Marlins decided to pitch to Ryan Howard, and he made them pay. Twice. Howard hit his 55th and 56th home runs, and Jamie Moyer pitched eight sharp innings to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat Florida 3-2 Friday night. Howard hit a two-run drive in the sixth and a solo shot in the eighth […]

    Reds 9, Pirates 1 (AP)

Javier Valentin doesn’t get many starts, so he tries not to waste them. The Cincinnati catcher, starting for the first time in three weeks, homered in consecutive at-bats Friday night and Adam Dunn added his 40th of the season to send the Reds to a 9-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. “I went a couple […]

    Dodgers 5, Mets 0 (AP)

Hong-Chih Kuo reacted to the news that he would get another start in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation with the same calm that he exhibited in his first start. “Just got to get ready,” he said with a blank look. Nomar Garciaparra and Rafael Furcal homered to help Kuo get his first major league victory […]

Miller hit in head by pitch from Oswalt (AP)

Damian Miller of the Milwaukee Brewers was hit in the head by a pitch from Houston ace Roy Oswalt in the seventh inning Friday night. Miller dropped to the ground, and Brewers trainers rushed out to attend to him. The catcher soon walked off the field under his own power. With the bases loaded and […]

    Orioles 9, Yankees 4 (AP)

For nearly seven weeks, Erik Bedard went to the mound in search of his 13th victory. He made seven starts, allowing three runs or fewer on five occasions, yet he never got a “W” by his name in the box score. “I couldn’t win a game,” he said. “That happens.” The wait ended Friday night, […]

    Braves 8, Cubs 4 (AP)

The Atlanta Braves must put together a long winning streak if they want to have any hope of making the playoffs. They’re facing the right team to get something started. Brian McCann homered and drove in three runs, leading Atlanta past the hapless Chicago Cubs 8-4 Friday night and providing a glimmer of hope to […]

Rangers recall reliever who once threw chair (AP)

The Texas Rangers on Friday recalled right-hander Frank Francisco, who pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault for throwing a chair that broke the nose of an Oakland Athletics female fan two years ago. He was sentenced to a work program and anger management classes. Manager Buck Showalter said before Friday night’s game that he plans […]

    Spurling claimed off waivers (AP)

The Milwaukee Brewers claimed reliever Chris Spurling off waivers from the Detroit Tigers on Friday. The 29-year-old right-hander went 0-0 with a 3.18 ERA for the Tigers in nine appearances this season before being optioned to Triple-A Toledo on June 4. He was 1-4 with a 2.04 ERA for the Mud Hens. To make room […]

Lopez dropped from rotation; Orioles call up 2 relievers (AP)

Rodrigo Lopez was dropped from Baltimore Orioles’ rotation Friday, a move designed to fortify an injury-riddled bullpen and keep five pitchers on the starting staff. Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo wanted another look at rookie Hayden Penn but decided against using a six-man rotation. So Lopez — whose 15 losses leads the majors — became the […]

Closer Eddie Guardado has elbow surgery (AP)

Reds closer Eddie Guardado will be sidelined well into next season after having surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament and tendon in his left elbow. Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the Reds medical director, performed the two-hour surgery. Guardado, 35, earned $6.5 million this season, the final year on his contract.
