    Phillies 14, Marlins 8 (AP)

The Florida Marlins followed up their no-hitter with a 17-hitter. Ryan Howard hit his 54th home run, one of four homers by the Philadelphia Phillies, and they rallied to rout Florida 14-8 Thursday night. Chris Coste, Chase Utley and Jeff Conine also homered for the Phillies, who overcame a 3-0 deficit against rookie Josh Johnson […]

    Mets 7, Dodgers 0 (AP)

While Jose Reyes was all smiles describing the first inside-the-park homer he’d ever hit, Pedro Martinez couldn’t wait to tease the young shortstop — in two languages — about the popup that clanked off his glove. Reyes had the biggest hit in the New York Mets’ 7-0 victory Thursday night over the Los Angeles Dodgers, […]

Humble Hoffman eyes playoffs as much as saves record (AP)

Trevor Hoffman seriously considered taking his changeup, his pursuit of history and, of course, his AC/DC to the Midwest last winter. It would have been a huge culture shock not only for Hoffman, a true Left Coast guy, but to San Diego fans who’ve grown used to his late-night, head-banging appearances as the Padres’ closer.

    Escobar has shoulder surgery (AP)

Washington Nationals outfielder Alex Escobar had surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Escobar was hurt sliding back to a base Aug. 25 in Atlanta. He was placed on the 15-day DL the following day. Escobar will begin rehabilitation on Monday in Washington.

Wrigley Field among Chicago landmarks honored with preservation awards (AP)

More than 20 landmark buildings, homeowners and businesses were honored Thursday for preserving historic Chicago — and among the projects recognized was an expansion of Wrigley Field’s bleachers. The Commission on Chicago Landmarks presented the Chicago Landmark Awards for Preservation Excellence during a ceremony at the LaSalle Bank Theater.

    Pirates 7, Cubs 5 (AP)

One wasn’t enough for Chris Duffy. Duffy homered leading off the game, then hit a tiebreaking drive in the ninth inning Thursday that led the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Chicago Cubs 7-5. “It’s always nice to hit a home run,” Duffy said. “Two is that much better, especially when we win the game.” After Pittsburgh […]

Woman accused of stalking Uecker must stay away from him for 4 years, baseball games included (AP)

A woman accused of stalking Hall of Fame baseball announcer Bob Uecker must stay away from him for four years under a restraining order issued Thursday that bars her from attending any game he broadcasts. A court commissioner issued the order after Ann Ladd testified that that she would not have further contact with Uecker […]

    Padres 2, Rockies 0, 11 innings (AP)

Rookie Paul McAnulty acted like he’d been there before, even though he hadn’t. With his parents in the stands, McAnulty hit his first career homer, a two-run shot with one out in the 11th inning, to lift San Diego to a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night that kept the Padres within […]

    Astros 5, Phillies 3 (AP)

Lance Berkman fell behind in the count, hoped for a pitch he could handle and made the most of an inside-out swing. Berkman’s bases-clearing double with two outs in the ninth inning gave the Houston Astros a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Andy Pettitte allowed two runs and seven hits in […]

    Giants 3, Reds 2 (AP)

Giants manager Felipe Alou thinks there’s still time for San Francisco to overcome its deficit in the NL wild-card race. “We’re going to play for a lot at home,” Alou said after Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. “The players understand this is serious stuff. They put themselves in position to challenge for first […]
